5 minutes with…Oldlove
Thursday, October 28th, 2010Ah love! Sweet, sweet love! We took 5 mintues with Subiaco’s latest edition Oldlove! You can find them here…Village Close, Denis Street SUBIACO WA 6008…for friend them on Facebook.

What inspires you to get out of bed in the morning?
The Bollywood ring tone of my overworked, under-credited, stuck-together mobile wakes me up. Then the thought of a hot shower and a lathering of Oldlove’s ‘Clint Eastwood for your Dirty Harry’ soap gets me going. Once that sumptuous goodness has soaked in, I can face the chaos in my life.
What was the last vintage item you acquired?
My lovely husband. He was a great find: well-aged, well-built and hidden under a burnt-out tyre at the tip. Well, maybe not, but like Oldlove’s pieces, I’ve been able to recycle him to fit all kinds of new purposes – shop builder, tongmaster, beer runner….
What is your favourite piece currently in store?
That’s a hard one. Everything’s a favourite. The fabulous vintage fabric purses and toys, the cufflinks and necklaces made from antique stamps, the quirky books, the brooches made from old dinner plates – it’s a tough call when you’re surrounded by pieces from so many talented homegrown artists. But, when 3pm rolls around, I’m always up for ‘a Cup of Tea & a Lie Down’ (a natural hand and body lotion made with therapeutic essential oils), but who isn’t?
Why/how did you start Oldlove and why is it called that?
From a very young age I’ve felt like a vintage person trapped in a young person’s body so, for the last 20 years, I’ve surrounded myself with all things retro. I’m an avid collector of hidden treasure – old furniture, records, clothes and glassware – it got to the point where my house was heaving with it and there was no room left for me and my friends to hang out. So we brainstormed ideas of how we could recycle, reuse and re-love all of these items.
We tested the waters by showcasing some of our creations at our launch at the Subi Hotel two years ago. The response to our range was overwhelming. We then grabbed a stall at various markets and set up a website…next thing you know we’d signed the lease to a perfect little shop in Village Close Subiaco and we haven’t looked back. I think the secret to Oldlove’s success is that she’s got a bit of loving for everyone. We get to drag gorgeous vintage pieces from certain death and recycle them into something new and fun, emerging Perth artists get the platform to sell their wares and make a name for themselves and customers have a place to buy unique and beautiful pieces they won’t find anywhere else.
Five words to describe yourself…
Hey, look another shiny thing!
